Stepped stainless steel pump shaft with keyways and a threaded end

We turn pump shafts between centres, cut the keyways, grind the journals on our own cylindrical grinders, straighten them on a hydraulic press and check run-out. We have supplied a pump shaft 9,082 mm long, and we make 200 mm diameter shafts 2,857 mm long in hardened and tempered 42CrMo4 as a repeat order.

How we make a pump shaft

  1. Turn between centres on our conventional and heavy-duty lathes, including a Yamazaki Mazak-30 Heavy Duty and a TOS SUI 50A/2000. Tell us the length and we confirm it on the quote.
  2. Cut keyways and flats on our universal knee mills and turret mills. Internal keyways are cut on a Sachman vertical slotter.
  3. Cut threads to drawing, on lathes with metric, imperial, module and DP thread settings.
  4. Heat treat where the drawing calls for it: quench and temper or stress relief, through a specialist heat treater. 42CrMo4 and 431 bar is usually bought already hardened and tempered.
  5. Grind the journals on our two cylindrical grinders: a Ribon RUR-E 1500 universal grinder and a long-bed Herbert Churchill BX Series 2. Longer external grinding is arranged through a specialist partner.
  6. Straighten and check run-out. Shafts are straightened on our hydraulic shaft-straightening press where needed, and run-out is checked at grinding.
  7. Coat or test if specified: hard chrome plating or ultrasonic testing, through specialist partners.
  8. Supply complete with nuts and keys when the order asks for them.

Documents for shafts

Tell us at quote stage which documents you need, such as an inspection report of drawing size against measured size, and the quote will say which we supply. We pass on the mill certificate and the heat-treatment certificate where the order requires them.

Questions buyers ask

Who makes pump shafts in Johannesburg?

MSE (Mechanical Spares & Engineering) makes plain and multistage pump shafts at its works in Germiston, east of Johannesburg. It turns shafts, cuts keyways, grinds journals and straightens shafts on its own machines, and checks run-out. It makes 200 mm diameter shafts 2,857 mm long in hardened and tempered 42CrMo4 as a repeat order.

Can someone make a pump shaft from a worn sample?

Yes. MSE makes replacement pump shafts from a worn or broken sample when there is no drawing. Send or bring the shaft with the pump make and model, and the material if you know it.

What is the longest pump shaft MSE has supplied?

A pump shaft 9,082 mm long and 91 mm in diameter, supplied in 2022. MSE also makes 200 mm diameter shafts 2,857 mm long in hardened and tempered 42CrMo4.

Can you grind and straighten a pump shaft?

Yes. MSE grinds shaft journals on two cylindrical grinders, straightens shafts on a hydraulic press and checks run-out at grinding. Longer external grinding goes to a specialist partner.

Do you supply shafts complete with nuts and keys?

Yes, when the order asks for them. Four-stage pump shafts, for example, have been supplied complete with nuts and keys.

Can you repair a worn shaft journal?

Yes. MSE repairs pump shaft journals to a written scope agreed with you, and to your quality control plan where you have one. See pump part repairs.

Quality

Checked against your drawing and revision.

  • Your order is checked against the drawing number and revision. If they differ, we ask you to confirm in writing.
  • Parts are inspected against your drawing.
  • Run-out is checked on ground shafts.
  • Tell us at quote stage which documents you need, and the quote will say which we supply.
